Starring in the title role is Adrian Pang, winner of ST Life! Theatre Awards 2009 for Best Actor for his role in the SRT's production of Shakespeare's <i>Much Ado About Nothing</i>. This time, Adrian Pang delivers yet another tantalizing and masterful Shakespearean performance. He nails the character of Macbeth into the wall with so much ease and pizazz, leaving the audience in awe of the character's essential emotional condition. However, Macbeth's wife (Lady Macbeth) did not quite reciprocate. Patricia Toh's portrayal of the supposedly scheming, controlling and manipulative Lady Macbeth was rather strange. At times, we were distracted by her accent, at times it was the way she said certain things. One major blow was the lack of chemistry between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Also, the ensemble was, at times, lacklustre in their performance. Perhaps it was a case of bad casting. However, there were good performances here and there by the likes of Daniel Jenkins, Keagan Kang, Adrian Pang and the three witches.</div><div><br /></div><div>What was supposed to be a thrill ride into the makings and ramifications of murder was given a 'dirtier and grittier' feel through director Nikolai Foster's visionary retelling of the UK classic. Foster makes rather bold decisions such as modernising the context of the piece. Meaning, clinical equipment, business suits, revolvers, radios, handphones! (and all of this amidst castles sword fights, witches, prophecies and etcetera. I personally could not fathom the idea, but if you're open enough, it's an interesting way to shake things up. </div><div><br /></div><div>Production design was good on the whole; simple, clean, classic and at times contemporary. One thing I hated was the smoke. Smoke machines were installed in the whole set and at times, all you saw were clouds of white smoke in front of the action. One might even speculate that the smoke was used to cover the more lacklustre acting of some cast members! (But who knows, really?)</div><div><br /></div><div>In all, if you thought 2009's <i>Much Ado About Nothing</i> was good, you'd be a little disappointed. But hey, it never hurts to catch a contemporary staging of Shakespeare once in a while.</div>:adeeb-fazah:http://www.blogger.com/profile/18263402381197537727noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1949410166271249859.post-59492818848425038052011-04-24T14:15:00.002+08:002011-04-24T14:21:51.288+08:00Oh wow it's been a long time.<div>Hello!</div><div>Let's see... This is something you guys have to watch yourself and make your own judgement. For one, it's the fullest most sensational theatre experience i've ever been to. Its setting in Africa and characters who don't normally talk just brings the audience back to Gaia. Somehow, you almost feel like your'e connecting with the Earth. Sounds strange? Yeah. Go watch and find out for yourself.:adeeb-fazah:http://www.blogger.com/profile/18263402381197537727noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1949410166271249859.post-68148306741966155292011-04-01T23:01:00.001+08:002011-04-01T23:01:36.337+08:00person of the daysupposedly, this was meant for 30 March. Apparently, the three of us were part of the school's Telephone Club, in which we make phonecalls and have meaningful conversations. in a CCA. Weird? Not just yet. So someone announces "and here are the winners of the Telephone championship!" The curtains remain closed. However, the three of us, microphoned, started making calls on protable telephones and started talking. after a minute or so of verbal defecation, we ended our phone calls. "And here they are!" The curtains rise, the school goes wild with applause and cheers. and the three of us bow. the other two held up what seemed to be the trophy shaped like a telephone. i didnt have a trophy so i held up my phone.<br /><br />tell me that was normal.:adeeb-fazah:http://www.blogger.com/profile/18263402381197537727noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1949410166271249859.post-56485637761657222802011-03-20T12:00:00.002+08:002011-03-20T12:20:07.029+08:00Theatre ReviewEmily of Emerald Hill<div>by Wild Rice (2011)</div><div><br /></div><div>For those who have heard about Emily of Emerald Hill, they would know that it is one among the few local pieces of theatre that are iconic and possess much cultural significance and are of high artistic standards. Unfortunately for these people, merely having 'having heard' about Emily doesn't quite cut it.</div><div><br /></div><div>Emily of Emerald Hill is a monologue that portraits the rise and fall of a Peranakan woman in the power of the men in her life. Written in an impactful, truthful and genuine fashion, Stella Kon is the intelligent brain child behind this delightfully wicked and sentimental melodrama whose truths about perseverance of the female in the face of life's ups and downs come across very vividly and wholeheartedly. </div><div><br /></div><div>Wild Rice legends Glenn Goei and Ivan Heng have done it again, this time probably their best work within the production company. Ivan Heng plays Emily in the most genuine yet delightfully spunky manner. His performance is stellar from the funniest cracks of intelligence to the most mellow of tragic moments in the play, and it leaves you wanting to meet Emily and give her a warm hug. Simply put, Ivan Heng truly brings Emily to the real world; a talent many people can only dream of mastering.</div><div><br /></div><div>Aesthetically, this production pulled together some great talents in set, sound, lighting, costume and multimedia design for the theatre. All of these elements were well inter-weaved into one impressive patch work that was the playground of Emily throughout the performance. The minimal white set, the distinctly playful use of lights and image projection and the vividly realistic Peranakan dresses ensured that the audience was enthralled yet not completely distracted from Emily herself.</div><div><br /></div><div>I remember sitting in the audience among so many people who were thoroughly moved (and were crying) by the whole performance. As such, the performance was given so much power to reach a point where the audience cannot simply 'watch' Emily but were meant instead to 'experience' Emily. By the end, a standing ovation was little but what I could offer in return from such an unforgettable theatre experience.</div>:adeeb-fazah:http://www.blogger.com/profile/18263402381197537727noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1949410166271249859.post-56846766122545848542011-03-13T22:04:00.001+08:002011-03-13T22:05:00.033+08:00untitledhey there!<br />i havent updated this space in a while, and that's cus ive been really busy with work and lotsa other stuff lately. it is ten pm and im stuck here at parkway taxi stand waiting for a cab to get home, and we've been waiting for 45minutes already!! grrrr<br />okay anyway, ive been busy running here and there with errands, gatherings, plays and open houses. all that on top of work every weekday from 8.30am to 6pm =/ well, at least im getting paid. seeya! i'll give you a theatre review as soon as i get the chance =):adeeb-fazah:http://www.blogger.com/profile/18263402381197537727noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1949410166271249859.post-30908653810801948952011-03-08T22:24:00.001+08:002011-03-08T22:24:06.219+08:00untitledLadies and Gentlemen and the creepy people tagging on my blog, i would just like to say hello!<br />The time now is 10.22pm and im about to sleep. I had a very strange dream.<br />So there i was minding my business, when people started going "Omg it's results day today!" and so i started to panic and anxiety took over. I woke up, and breathed a sigh of relief thinking, "phew it was just a dream." i told my brother about the dream, and immediately someone yelled (again) "BUT IT IS RESULTS DAY!" and then i checked my phone. the date displayed was "44 February" whic (apparently) means it was technically march. So we rushed to school. My results? AABB. I was impressed and ecstatic. after that bout of happiness, i woke up.<br />"OMG WHAT DATE IS IT TODAY?" it was then, when i knew i needed a totem. I was confused as to whether i was or wasnt still dreaming. Creepy, no?:adeeb-fazah:http://www.blogger.com/profile/18263402381197537727noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1949410166271249859.post-47562734732744688732011-02-21T21:05:00.001+08:002011-02-21T21:05:42.532+08:00before i forget, did I mention I was retrenched?<br />AGAIN?<br />I must say, though, that i was happy to be let go of. However, this is less anxiety-inducing than you might think.<br />Lately I've been praying for "good a level results". Literally, "good" can take on many angles. I was thinking, and I realized that it just wasnt specific. If my prayers were in essay form, God would circle "good" in red and annotate it with a "vague", or something to that extent. Whatever it is, Im hoping for the best.<br />Anyway, HELLO =) I havent been here in a while. Ive been sick lately :( and im just recovering. We are mostly lucky people and we seldom realise it. As the saying goes, you seldom realise what you have in front of you until it's gone.<div><br /></div><div>We are all lucky people living in Singapore. We live in a house, have food, and basic amenities. We quickly forget about the people around us who may be living in less comfortable conditions and worse, in poverty. We are instead caught up with pursuing more and more money and power, so much that in the face of failure, we are disappointed tremendously. We may or may not lose hope, but we forget that we did not lose our house, our friends, family, or the money in our pockets that we use to buy tomorrow's lunch. It's like communication failure. <br />At this point we should all stop talking and listen to the wind.<br />Of all the platitudes, the mundanely and strenuously over-repeated phrases and slogans we shove down each other's throats, some take on more impactful forms. These are the words that, many a times, hurt one another.<br />Let's stop talking and sit at the table together, enjoying the meal in silence. Since no good words shall be spoken, none shall be spoken at all. <br />That's the way i like this. Because in the end, we stick to each other. However joyful or painful. We stick to each other.<br />That's family.:adeeb-fazah:http://www.blogger.com/profile/18263402381197537727noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1949410166271249859.post-28590677466122515802011-01-25T18:46:00.001+08:002011-01-25T18:46:28.798+08:00Years Of ClassHello everyone! I'm back from 09A15 class chalet at NSRCC and it was awesome. Not the typical chalet with a barbecue, lotsa people staying overnight, cycling, Macs breakfast and the usual games of Taboo and Twister (and mahjong). But we had the usual like XBox and some DVDs to keep us from rotting. For the most of the chalet, it was a reunion. All we wanted to do was reconnect, after having not seen each other for months.<br />I enjoy reconnecting with friends. It's such a joyful motion.:adeeb-fazah:http://www.blogger.com/profile/18263402381197537727noreply@blogger.com
